Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. She founded Feminist Frequency the site which features video and posts on the representations of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a not-for profit educational site that explores the representation of women in pop culture narratives - is created and is directed by Sarkeesian. Committed to destroying the stereotypes that are associated with women in pop culture, she also works with issues that relate to the gender-specific harassment of women as well as different classes of individuals online. Sarkeesian holds a Masters in social and political thinking from York University. As a public speaker, she is well-known and has given talks at TEDxWomen XOXO and United Nations Broadband Working Group. From an early age, Sarkeesian was fascinated with gender issues as well as feminist ideas. When she was still in school, in 2009, she launched her Feminist Frequency website. As of 2009, this ambitious young woman was slammed online for launching a website that focused on the gender of videogames. The harassment didn't discourage her. The experience only strengthened her as a feminist journalist. Her many notable contributions in the field of feminist have been recognized by numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian won awards for her efforts as a critique of media and founded Feminist Frequency. The non-profit examines how women are depicted in pop culture today.
