
Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1994, grew up in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of both black and white parents. She was raised on her mother's side. Her skin shade made her feel different in her early years. Her parents were struggling financially and were forced to move 16 times to pursue her father's job. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her early days "there always was a chance for re-invention, to make something new."As growing up, Russell was already artistically at first. she desired to pursue a profession in ballet. She later wanted to become an artist. It was when she was 18 that she began her first class in acting. She borrowed money from her job to purchase a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. She would return to work once her savings ran out and then resume auditioning again. It went on for four years until she was finally offered her first big television appearance.
